What is the best time of year to have your gutters cleaned?

We’ve discussed gutter cleaning in some depth on this blog so far, but with the weather in the UK being so bad over the past few months – especially with the rainfall we’ve had – we’ve decided that there is another topic we’d like to cover on the subject.

When thinking about having their gutters cleaned by a professional firm, many people want to make sure that they are getting the best possible value for money. To do this, you will want to make sure that you are having your gutters cleaned at the optimum time of year for it, reducing the risk that they will quickly become blocked again. In my opinion, there are two times when having your gutters cleaned will provide excellent value.

When they really need it

The first of these times is quite simply ‘when they really need it!’. When gutters are blocked, leaking or overflowing, they can quickly cause great damage to your property. This could include damp, roof problems, rotting wood and more. If your gutters really need cleaning then putting it off for some short term financial gain – or to reduce the short term financial pain – really can prove to be a false economy. After spending many years providing gutter cleaning services, I would recommend having them cleaned sometime around January. This is the time of year when most – if not all – of the leaves have fallen from the trees and therefore there is less chance of them becoming blocked again a week or two later. Of course, you may run into a problem if you try to have them cleaned at this time of year and it is extremely cold, causing the water in the gutters to freeze. More often than not though, a skilled operative will be able to find a gap in the weather in order to get your gutters thoroughly and adequately cleaned for you, leaving you set to face the weather for another year knowing that your gutters are clear and in good order.

Don’t put it off!

So there we have it, two times when it makes the best sense to have your gutters cleaned.

Firstly, when they really need it. It makes no financial sense to put off having your gutters cleaned when there is a known issue. In fact, it could be financial folly. Secondly, I feel that around January time is the optimum time to have your guttering cleared, reducing the chance that they will quickly become blocked again by further falling leaves.
